9 to 5 meets 9 ½ weeks
Not so much chick-lit as clit-lit, this intímate romp through the personal and professional sex-life of a leading London dominatrix may leave you hot under the collar, but is not for the faint-hearted. I say that not because her clients' fantasies are described in a brash or gratuitous way, but because I'm an English woman and not all that comfortable reading about other people's sex lives, especially when it comes to nappy fetishes. However, like a fascinating Channel 4 documentary, the curious nature of human sexuality is revealed in a matter-of-fact fashion and you can't help but delve deeper, even while you tut and tell yourself you'll only read one more page of this salacious, sorry educational stuff. Why do powerful politicians pay a fortune to be humiliated? Find out here.
There are several layers to Jacky's memoir – for some, the emergence of an exotically reinvented Mistress from the ashes of a dowdy battered wife will provide sufficient inspiration that it's never too late to turn your life around. Ms Donovan's journey hasn't only encompassed a physical transformation such as halving her body weight, but shows that if you're passionate about your hobby – even when it involves whips – you can turn this into a money-spinner.
For others, peeking into the life of a conventional office worker whose affair with her boss unleashes hidden, formerly forbidden desires will prove the real eye-opener - think lesbian sex, threesomes and the shock of her first S&M club. On a more sombre note, anyone who's had an affair with a married man will relate to the endless merry-go-round of missed dates, heartbreak and shattered hopes. Just as well there are also laugh-out-loud moments. My favourite is when our author is talked into throwing her knickers out of the car window during high-speed phone sex. Do try this at home (but possibly not on the M4).
Despite my prudishness, it's been fun reading racier segments to my boyfriend and he's learnt a thing or two about female desires – so this could also give a boost to your sex life. Reading in bed together is considerably more fun and now involves whipped cream rather than tea and biscuits...
For me, Instant whips is the literary equivalent of feminist comedy Nine to Five with the sensuality and shock factor of 9 ½ weeks. Some of the puns are a bit cringe-worthy, but the theme of personal transformation coupled with her insight into both male and female fantasies is a real eye-opener. Definitely worth a read.
LOVE
Simply wonderful. I felt myself change with Jackie. I got many thrills and pulsing waves of my own. my heart was in it too. ups and downs, tears laughter and amazing sex. I recommend it. It's a long ride but a gloriously freeing female at the lead.

An eye opener
Telling the story of Jacky's transformation from a straight-laced business executive to a high-flying dominatrix, this book makes for very interesting reading. Written in a no-nonsense, matter-of-fact way, it gives an honest account of her life that has had more than its fair share of highs but also a few lows. At times it is endearingly sad, particularly the parts about her relationships with her family and the outcome of her relationship with the married man.

For me, the most entertaining parts of the book are the stories of Jacky's work exploits. It is certainly not a normal nine to five job it has to be said. It isn't even a normal five to nine job - and that of course is its appeal. It was a chance to find out more about peopIe and lives I know little about and thought it was a fantastic eye opener into human 'quirks' and what goes on behind (some) closed doors.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes discovering other people's lives in biographies, to anyone who finds the world of a dominatrix interesting or to anyone who is lacking in confidence and could see this as a self-help book with a difference.

A cracking read
No oun intended an excellent frank , funny and interesting read. One womans rather oeculiar journey told with honesty and wit. You won't regret purchasing it

Loved this book. Read it in one sitting... funny, sad, eye opening but most of all a bloody good story written by a woman who has lived life in the "real lane".
Well done Jacks... you kept me interested and entertained right to the last line! lolxx

WOW
